The labia majora are the outer vaginal lips. The most visible external portion of the female genitalia, they encompass and protect the openings of the vagina, the urethra, and the clitoris.
Pregnancy, hormones, and even sports can affect the genitalia. The “outer lips” or labia majora are susceptible to volume loss during the aging process. In some patients, fluctuation in body weight may cause enlargement and stretching of the outer lips resulting in excess skin.
This excess skin of the labia can lead to pain during normal daily activities. Oftentimes, the problem is of a cosmetic nature. Low self-esteem is caused by the embarrassment of a sagging or puffy labia majora.
What Is a Labia Majora Reduction?
The problem is physical, psychological or both. Labia majora reduction surgery may be a minor procedure, but it is life-changing for those who suffer.
Most patients will benefit from fat grafting with platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) to restore volume to the outer lips. In select cases, surgical reduction of the external outer lips is required.
Labia Majora Reduction Surgery
The operation varies according to your individual situation and needs. More often than not, labia majora reduction surgery is carried out under general anesthesia and takes about 1 – 2 hours.
Parts of the outer labia are removed to reduce the size and the skin is tightened to re-sculpt them.
Labia Majora Reduction Recovery
Post-operatively, you may feel sore and tired for a couple of days. Ensure you get plenty of bed rest during the first week. The swelling in the area may result in discomfort when urinating.
While you need to wait a full 24 hours after surgery before showering, good hygiene, meaning two showers a day, is essential to your recovery.
You can return to work a week after surgery. More strenuous activities can resume after two to three weeks.
Stick to loosely fitted underwear for two weeks after surgery. Avoid the use of tampons for the first six weeks after surgery.
Depending on your healing process, sexual intercourse may be resumed after six weeks.
Labia Majora Surgery Cost
